Writing A Self-Evaluation Essay: A Manual For Newbies

A self-evaluation essay is not a regularly assigned paper, so students are often confused about what they need to do. Even though it sounds rather complicated, the assignment is actually quite simple. The paper is a reflection of an experience that usually involved learning something new or performing a complicated task. But, once you have completed the task, writing about it is not difficult.

Include the Same Components

This paper requires the same components that every other essay needs: an introduction, body, and conclusion. The only difference between this and other papers are the topics and point of view that is needed.

First-person Perspective

This type of paper requires a first-person perspective. Because you are writing about yourself, you can appropriately use the pronouns I, me, and my. As usually, it is best to avoid using you in a writing assignment because you are not talking about the reader - you are writing about the yourself. So, you can write about “my experience” or “I learned” and it is appropriate.

Write about the Focus

It is also important to be very clear about the purpose of the paper. Since you are writing about your experience, you should talk about your experience. Share what you learned and the tasks that you untook to learn the skill. You can write about the difficulties you experienced and you can write about what was easy for you. This can all be done in the proper essay format.

Format the Introduction

Your introduction should be structured in the same way, with a hook, background information, and a thesis. The hook can be about your experience. It can be effectively done with a quote about a similar experience. The background information should be limited so you can write about it detail in the body paragraphs. The thesis will broadly explain what you learned with a preview of your self-evaluation.

Go into Detail in the Body Paragraphs

The body paragraphs should go into detail about your experience. It usually works best when presented in a chronological order. You can also have the first body paragraph focus on the outcome and the next few can focus on how you got there.

Share Your Experience in the Conclusion

The conclusion should sum up your experience. You can include what you would gladly do again and what you would do differently if you had the chance. It can also be helpful to wrap up the paper with advice to someone who might learn the same thing you did.
